This also results in an unnecessarily low quality file because the video file didn’t have to be damaged by lossy compression more than once.įor example, let’s say you have a 50 GB lossless file sourced from a VHS-C tape. If you use lossy compression more than once, you damage the video multiple times. This will result in the best possible lossy file at the end of the process. You do all of your work with lossless files, and then you save a lossy file for publishing on the internet. That is why it should only ever be used as the final step. That is to say, you can’t get that lost quality back again. Once this happens, there is no going back. Lossy compression makes video files smaller by reducing the quality of the picture. Lossy compression is meant to be used to “lock” your video into place. Lossy compression is designed to be used AFTER a video file is completed and isn’t being worked on anymore. Lossy compression is great for making files small enough to share online or to watch on a smartphone. Lossy compression is used very widely, and to be clear, it isn’t all bad. However, most of our competitors aren’t able to work with files that big, so they resort to lossy compression and damage the quality of your videos in the name of convenience for themselves. 50 GB is still pretty big, but not too big for us at Archival Works. In my experience, a two hour Hi8, Video8 or other 8mm tape is around 140 to 200 GB uncompressed, but can be shrunk down to around 50 GB with the most advanced lossless video compression technology available. However, the one flaw of lossless compression is that it might not make the files small enough for a particular workflow. This has the added bonus of being reversible you could reverse the process and end up with the same file you started with. Lossless compression is great because it makes the video files smaller and easier to work with, but does so without damaging picture quality in anyway. This is done through clever mathematical trickery and is what we use here at Archival Works. It is compressing the video file to make it smaller, but doing so without actually losing any quality. Lossless video compression is exactly that. There’s the term again- “lossless”… But “lossy”? What does that mean? Lossy, is the opposite of lossless that is to say, picture quality HAS been lost. There are two types of compression: lossless compression and lossy compression. ![]() ![]() To solve this problem we use lossless video compression (sometimes also called “lossless video encoding”) to make video files smaller. These files are so large they can be difficult or even impossible to watch or to work with. A two hour long 4k UHD movie like you might find on Netflix would be 3400 GB-That’s huge! A 60-minute standard definition video (like that from a VHS tape) is a massive 70 GB. Makes sense, but what is it we’re losing? Or in the case of Archival Works, what is it we are NOT losing? The answer? Picture quality.įull quality and uncompressed video files are massive. If something doesn’t have loss, then it is loss-less. In short, lossless means exactly what it sounds like. 1/30/2024 0 Comments Stranger things 3 game walkthrough![]() As part of unlocking all collectibles on the map you are going to have to complete all Jedi Chambers.Īfter collecting all Map Upgrades, start cleaning out every single planet’s territory. The painting depicts a surreal landscape, where melting clocks are everywhere. The Persistence of Memory is a painting by Salvador Dali, created in 1931. In this post, we will dive into the history of the Persistence of Memory and explain the hidden meanings behind it. Even if you may not be familiar with the name, you have more than likely seen the painting. (10) Dali’s work played directly into this purpose. The Persistence of Memory is one of those paintings that is universally recognized regardless of who you are. In the words of Anton Breton, another leader of Surrealism, the movement “…rests upon the belief in the higher reality of specific forms of associations, previously neglected, in the omnipotence of dreams, and in the disinterested play of thinking”. It was different, however, because it attempted to bring greater meaning to logic and reason by fusing reality with the subconscious. (9) Surrealism came about in the period between the world wars and was similar in attitude to Dadaism. ![]() Janson’s History of Art says, “Dali has created a provocative image of mysterious objects that can be read as metaphors for the deepest desires, fears, and anxieties, especially sexual, of the mind, and that can unleash multiple interpretations from a viewer’s own subconscious”. One of the most obvious is the passage of time, which eventually leads to death-indicated by the melting clocks and watch. The Persistence of Memory does not allow for specific interpretation, as surrealist paintings were typically hard to decipher, but it evokes many associations. Light, shape, and space are all incorporated to serve the purpose of unlocking the inner subconscious of the human mind they all give the painting an eerie, hallucinogenic quality that puts the viewer into the world of the subconscious, where normal objects are not what they seem and have deep significance. The cliffs are off in the distance, indicating that they have some significance, but they are not at the forefront of the purpose. We have a different concept of space in our dreams things can be farther away than they would be in real life, or objects would be bigger, smaller, or harder to reach. As stated before, the element of space also has a dreamlike quality to it. This is an indication of the paranoid state that Dali was in while he created the piece, and it serves to help unlock the subconscious parts of the mind. Shape also serves the painting well the strange shapes add an eerie feeling to the painting, and give it a dreamlike quality. With time being such an important part of the interpretation of the piece, the light only serves to enhance it. Being able to see that there is a specific time of day is interesting because of the watches, which give the impression that time is important to the piece, as well as the title, which uses the word ‘memory’, also indicating time. The light in the painting shows a specific time of day, most likely sunset. His use of light, shape, and space all contribute to his purpose. Overall, the painting uses the elements of light, shape, and space in an interesting manner. There are ants crawling on the case of the pocket watch. There is a fly standing on the clock that is draped over the edge of the block, and there is a pocket watch sitting nearby. The objects that are in this setting appear to be three melting watches one draped over a tree-branch that is protruding from a solid block, one on the block itself, and one over what appears to be an amorphous head with a closed human eye painted on it and a neck trailing behind it. First of all, it the subjects at the forefront of the painting with a cliff in the background that overlooks a body of water this is in the upper right-hand corner. There are many pieces of the painting to pay attention to. (5) It is a strange piece, and hard to understand without researching its background. It fits perfectly into the surrealist movement in that it depicts a hallucinatory dreamlike world with enigmatic objects that have hidden meanings. (4) He was just beginning to move into surrealism, so he still had a lot of changes ahead of him, but it is the beginning of a line of paintings that are very similar in style. One of his most famous paintings is The Persistence of Memory, which was painted in 1931, near the beginning of his surrealist period. 1/30/2024 0 Comments Dream smileOur lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.
